Born Johannesburg in 1945,of 50% Irish and 50% Scottish/Swedish descent, Mike spent most of his formative years in Namibia and Kimberly where he was a boarding pupil at Christian Brothers College, until Matric in 1962.
He attended The University of Natal (now Kwa Zulu Natal) in Durban, initially studying Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, but eventually graduating (BA, BCom) in Economics, Business Finance and Administration in 1969/73. His working life was spent mostly in the IT industry, (Business Analysis and Financial Modelling) in the Mining Financial and Insurance Sectors.
His faith-life took a turn in 1985 when he became involved in the Johannesburg Charismatic Renewal and thereafter spending some years in personal evangelization, via direct witness in Evangelism Explosion 3, with Mike Mahony at Family of God, and the Johannesburg Anglican Diocese; and subsequently in Life in the Spirit Seminars and the Alpha program at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Parish, Rivonia. It was there that the Alpha program was first introduced to the Catholic Church in South Africa, in 1995.
After retiring to Clarens in 2000 Mike subsequently moved to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) (to escape the cold Free State winters) and is presently a parishioner at Mater Dei parish in Gqeberha (PE), where he is once more becoming involved in Parish Evangelisation.
Mike married Rosemary in 1968 and has a son, daughter-in-law and two grand children, all in Johannesburg.
